Far Infrared Saunas for Natural Therapy - Make an Infra Red Sauna Part of Your Day

Far infrared saunas are a contemporary and milder alternative to a traditional Finnish sauna. Both types recognize the therapeutic value of heat on the body's tissues - particularly in our modern world where pollutants and toxins bombard us every day.

The natural benefits of sunlight - without the damage

Far infrared (FIR) heat is a necessary form of energy that we all need for good health - a lack of it can result in sickness and even depression. Infra-red energy from the sun is different from the harsh ultra-violet rays and solar radiation that burns and prematurely ages skin. In fact, infrared is so gentle, hospitals use it to keep newborn babies warm.

Satisfying deep heat

Naturally occurring infrared radiant heat warms the body directly as invisible rays penetrate deeply into muscles and tissue. Although the body is heated, the air around remains cool - you will sweat more even though temperatures are lower. The experience is enjoyable but not the same as a Finnish style sauna.

Facts and figures

A ceramic heating element emits 95% of its heat in infrared form in the most beneficial wave length range of between 5 to 12 microns. In contrast an incoloy, or steel rod heater will emit only 50-60% FIR, with the majority between 0-7 microns.

Most infrared heaters plug into standard 120 volt outlets. Larger areas require a dedicated 15 or 20 amp plug that must be installed by an electrician. Turn to the highest setting - if it gets too hot open the door rather than turn the heater off and on, since the constant flow of infrared will be interrupted.

Build a relaxing home sauna

Although there is no need to have an enclosed space, a special room can be built to enjoy the experience of an infrared sauna. Two person sizes are the most popular but for space limitation a one person personal sauna is practical. Bigger corner units can fit 3 comfortably.

A modular sauna may be constructed from basswood, birch or hemlock. However, fir and poplar are the best options because they give off no odor or irritants. Stay away from plywood and construction that uses resins, toxic glues and veneers.

Cedar is a reliable choice for steam saunas because of its ability to weather the blasts of steam and high temperatures. Some people choose not to use cedar with an infra red sauna because it contains volatile oils that may cause irritation to the lungs, though it is a suitable option.

With double wall construction the outside of the sauna never gets warm and it can be set up flush to the wall. There needs to be at least 2" clearance above the roof to allow for the electronics, air vent and fan.

Do-it-yourself kits

Build a sauna room from an infrared sauna kit and install emitters, reflectors, controls and thermostats to control and limit temperature – also available in a kit. Items are priced separately because larger rooms require extra units to ensure the benefit of infrared from all angles.

Portable and convenient

Portable infra red saunas are easy to assemble and less expensive to operate. They require minimal maintenance and no special plumbing or ventilation. FIR heat is transmitted through a super conductive energy efficient carbon sheet.

Lying down in a portable infrared sauna is relaxing and making it possible to take advantage of the sweat sessions for longer periods of time.

Personal sauna designs include a dome shaped shell made from fiberglass or vinyl leather with an optional reflection mat. The lightest unit looks like a sleeping bag and can be folded away when not in use.

Look and feel much better

Reported claims of far infrared sauna therapy include stress reduction and pain management for arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Skin purification and detoxification are other advantages. Although time in a sauna can result in losing weight, it is mostly due to the loss of fluid - though it is possible to burn up to 600 calories in half an hour.

Infrared saunas are well recognized for their effectiveness in Japan, China, Europe and Australia - and researchers continue to test the benefits. Fitness centers, spas and doctors offices have added sauna treatments to promote better health.

Sauna brands to choose from

The differences in saunas include construction materials, element or emitter type and controls. High end brands include Healthmate, Cedrus and SoftHeat. Olympic, Chelan, and Cashmere models by Amerec are also popular. The mid priced range offers quality components while low end discounters are likely to offer inferior parts.

10 Reasons to Invest in an Infrared Sauna

1. Specific health claims are numerous - from increased energy and lowered blood pressure to better circulation and an improved immune system.
2. Less intense environment than traditional saunas with lower temperatures and no steam - you can stay in longer for a more thorough cleansing.
3. Easy maintenance - no mold or mildew to deal with - though steam saunas only need to be wiped down occasionally with a mild dish detergent solution.
4. Straightforward to put together - set up is done in a matter of hours.
5. No special wiring, plumbing or venting is required.
Inexpensive to operate.
6. Safe - doesn't get hot so it won't cause burns.
7. No need to preheat room - it's ready to go.
8. Affordable - a range of prices means anyone can add a sauna to their daily routine.
9. Portable models can be packed away when not in use.

Why not to go with Infrared

For you it's not a sauna unless there's plenty of heat and steam.
